Hey everyone,
I read most threads in this forum about overheating, but it turned out that's not at all a concern in a daily basis. What is a concern, however, is the instant fan noise whenever the laptop gets under load.
It is constant when running games (always at 6000 rpm). I've tried Call of Duty IV, and Starcraft II. Also Crysis II via Boot Camp.
It may happen under Facetime.
It may happen if you leave a flash animation running in a tab.
it may happen with AirVideo Server (serving to an iPod).
Turns out there's really no middle ground for this fan. It is either audible, or isn't. With 2000 rpm you know it's there, but frankly that's barely a concern. Sometimes it turns on suddenly and goes to maximum speed in seconds, stays there for a minute or two, then drops down.
So I guess that ANY heavy load will come with fan noise. Here's what I need to ask then.
- Is this a given for Sandy Bridge?
- Do you have this kind of noise in your C2D MacBooks (Air included)?
- Is it better when you have more fans involved (larger MBP's, iMacs..)?
Like I said, it hasn't been that much a concern for most uses, because they stay under the radar. The MBP gets hot but that's not even a problem. What I get is there is a clear threshold between what you can do (silently) and what produces noise. I stopped playing games because I really cannot do with that much noise. Turns out the GPU can roll with a lot of games, but I thought the noise wasn't included. Plus I'm afraid I'll damage the laptop if the fan is on for so long.
I'm thinking I'd rather have lower processing power and silent operation. I can take a longer iPhoto import if I don't hear this fan. Help?

I was wondering if anyone else has seen this issue while running Windows 7 from boot camp: My internal speakers don't work - but all sounds work perfectly if I plug in a pair of headphones. I've read about a lot of cases where Windows 7 still assumes a pair of headphones have been plugged in with other Macs and that 'jiggling' the headphones resolves the issue, but that's not my problem. Windows 7 reports - correctly - that headphones are NOT plugged in, yet still no sound through my speakers.
To make it even more frustrating, my speakers were working for the first few boots into Windows 7, but now I can't get a single sound. I've tried reloading all the latest bootcamp drivers, installing other sound drivers (Realtek and Cirrus) with no results. I don't boot into Win 7 often, but it would be nice to have sound. It's these kind of issues that do NOT make me miss the Win experience. :)
Anyone else with this experience? I can't find anything that reports this problem with other MBAs. I'm running a 13" ultimate, but was curious to see if any other Late 2010 MBA owners were running into the same issue.
Thanks for sharing any similar experiences!

Only deal with people that are in NY and can show the unit ... just keep looking
You could find something even 2-3 months before moving date. Might be a scenario where the tenant is not renewing their lease and the landlord knows this in advance.
just be patient and do not rent unless you have a good feeling about the place.
good luck ... Manhattan is an awesome place to live.

Ok cheers guys for that, so is it worth it for being a memory stick and a iPod?
So what does the "i" in imac and iPod stand for and the "e" in eMac???
The shuffle is EXCELLENT as a dual use gadget.
The "i" in iMac originally stood for internet...the first iMacs were touted as the simplest, quickest way to get online.
The "e" is for education, as the eMacs were originally only available to schools but consumer interest convinced Apple to offer them to everyone.
The "i" doesn't really stand for internet anymore, it's simply what Apple uses to differentiate their consumer and professional lines.

Basically, it doesn't sound too good. It might sound better with high impedance cans. I have some akg k77 and the output on my macbook sound pretty bad compared to my external soundcard.
I don't think you'll get trouble with getting enough volume out of it with high impedance headphones as the output can go ridiculously high so I don't think that would be a problem even with high impedance cans.

yesterday while browsing the forums I got kicked out.
Arn, am I a registered user?
'cause during MW forums were only for registered users and I could not get on.

Kyle,
I destroyed the case on my previous PB trying to swap the drive. It was awful, and you are so correct the PBFixit, does such a poor job in explaining this part. Thans for the tip!

Pretty harsh suggested response don't you think. In general it is relatively trivial for the mods to change a thread title, so if you think it is a problem then please report it and then we can assess the situation.
I don't see it all too often so am not sure that it is such a widespread problem that it needs to be written in to the rules

My local Best Buy does store bundles, but it's a simple plastic strap holding a console together with an extra controller. Slip the controller out, discard the strap, and voila, you've got a bare console.
My GF actually wanted a PS3 with a spare controller, but not in any of the colors that were bundled. So we slipped out the black controller and inserted a pink controller. No problems.

Just curious. I got my new pb and am overall very very happy with it. But i am a biologist and work that i do requires up close scrutinay of several photographs. These horizontal lines make that very annoying. If this is a software problem i wont be that discouraged, but if it is hardware i may have to get a pre-october refurb. Anyone have any insight into this issue?

here are some pics:
more avalible upon request...
the processor is celeron.
the computer does come with a working battery that holds 46 min. of charge as well, as an extra battary cover, a phone cord, and ethernet cord, the power adapter, an external mouse., and if I can find it, a copy of windows ME will also be included. This computer has been very well taken care of by me, but I switched to mac, so I don't need this anymore :)
 Windows Me! *cries in the corner*

....It would be best to wait until this Summer for the next OS upgrade to come out (10.7 aka Lion) otherwise you'll be looking at an OS upgrade cost to you in the future.
Perhaps Lion will cost relatively little, such as the Snow Leopard upgrade.

I also have a pair. They're a perfect complement to my iPhone when used with the headset.
About the bass response, I've found that getting a great, punchy, and tight kick sound depends mainly on the fitting of the earbuds. Achieving an air-tight seal is critical for this.
All in all a great pair of earbuds!

PRAM/NVRAM has nothing to do with the OP's issue.
Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM
When to reset NVRAM or PRAM
SMC might help with some fan, unexpected power-offs or slow performance issues, but not heat-related shutdowns, as the OP described.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
My apologies. I've always just done a PRAM reset after an SMC reset, as kind of a "cover all bases" kind of thing.
Thanks for pointing that out though. :) Funny thing is, I've read that article before, but I was never actually sure what exactly was stored in PRAM, woe is me!

And this, my friends, is an ass-fact.

wow, that's totall nuts - who'd a thought, non-expo overload.
yep, get more memory at least for the server, if the site gets this popular, you're going to need to upgrade.
maybe a little mention that the site needs a new server thread - donations accepted - i'd give $10.....
and now that the forums are only available to members, you're only going to increase membership - remember we got more than 1500 because of the lockdown on MWNY last week.
the site got 600+ members since the server fart alone - macrumors is off and running....
way to go arn!:D

WOW! that is a hell of a price. I thought 700 for mine with an upgrade was tasty!
tasty yes ,but for me it was worth every pence to get one in pristine condition with not a single sign of wear

Just a quick question... I downloaded the SMP Intel version for my MacBook Pro, but I can't figure out how to pause it! Last night I did a ctrl-c (quit) and it closed out... but this morning it started all over! What on earth is the "pause" command?
(yes I know I don't need to stop it for most things, but I like to at night and while I study because of the extra noise it creates.)
Well since its beta there is bound to be problems. For example in the last version (non-public beta) there was problems with check points BIG problems so the current version does not have them, so i you stop it, it will start over. Of coarse this will be fixed in time. Also another bug if you disable airport folding stops......
