There's an awful lot of cock-suredness on this board.
If MS releases this player, which will have full wireless integration with the msTunes Music Store through your home PC with WMA10 or your XBOX360 some people could be persuaded to get it. The end-to-end process in a major part of the iPod experience, and this is MS's plan to get in on it.
Would I get one? No, because I have an Apple computer - but 90% of the world still runs windows, and now they won't have to install third party software or worry about integration issues. Their new PC (or old with new and improved WMA10) will connect right up and automatically fill up their new, media device - all without wires!
Give MS the benefit of the doubt here. If you dismiss them, you run the risk of falling prey to their marketing/sales/monopoly-position machine.

I have a first gen iPad running 4.3.1, but although iTunes says a newer version is available, after it downloads it, extracts it, verifies my device and backs it up, it then says "this device isn't eligible for the requested build".
Does that mean the first gen iPad is now officially "legacy" and maxes out at 4.3.1? Or should I try a total restore/reset and update?

Okay, I just reproduced this problem. After which I rolled my eyes and said "What's the big deal?"
I mean really, this is BEYOND picky. No wonder us Apple users have a reputation for being douchebags.
I hadn't even NOTICED this until now, and now that I have, I'm not really sure why I'm supposed to care. Honestly, if it's a choice between fixing this and putting more development resources into iOS 5, I much prefer the latter.

EDIT: I wanted to add that I'd rather my app launch faster than for time to be wasted playing a silly animation. Based on how fast the app comes up, that may be what's going on here.
Open a stock app, like Messages or Photos.
Watch the animation, look at how the icons fly off to the edges of the screen and the app you pressed zooms forward from the centre of the screen and into full screen view. That, is the animation for launching an app.
Now try it on, for example, Infinity Blade, Engadget, TUAW, Dead Space, Final Fantasy 3 (basically 99.9% of third party apps). Notice that when you press the app icon, it dulls as normal, but then the app immediately appears on screen. No home screen icons zooming off to the edges of the screen, no app you are loading zooming forward from the centre of the screen to fill the entire viewable area.
Only once the app has been loaded, and is in the memory, can you open/close the app and get the animation as normal.
No doubt you'll say you don't have that on your phone, but there you go.

I have installed 4.3.2 on 3gs and it is...nice...i mean the home screen animations are smoother.... don't have any issues with the battery.....everything is....nice
4.3 was terrible...home screen icons and animations were jerky...some bugs with safari...e to 3g was long and sometimes resulting in network lost
4.3.1 was a little better....no bugs just slow animations
4.3.2 is...is...nice
P.s. if you have battery issues, it is not because of ios update..it is from your settings because when you restore to your phone the settings are also restored...so the problem remains...try to kill ping with restrictions...also try to recreate your email accounts...push to off...notifications also off...
Also try ipod settings eq off...and i have specified my carrier...its not automatic

Pretty soon you won't be switching channels. You'll be switching apps.

My argument, as well as others, is that you shouldn't have to do that. That's the complaint. They should give an option for a "Vanilla" install, and leave it at that. This is the same issue with Windows. You buy a new PC from DELL, HP, or whoever, and it's filled with all this extra stuff. Sure, I can reformat it, and do all that, but why? It's BRAND NEW. I shouldn't have to do anything, except install the apps I want/need, and files.

I work for a company called Prime Alliance Solutions and our entire company is migrating from Windows machine to macs running Parallels. We are also changing out our windows servers to a to Xserves. Most of the users have never used macs before but overall they have had an excellent experience!!! :) ... Things are changing specially if our Windows Centric Business is willing to go all Mac! I am soo stoked for APPLE!!

If that base is solid enough, Urge won't fly, and hence there won't be a large installed base of protected WMA files in search of a player. If a significant number of Vista users are just starting their collection, or building on existing MP3s, there is a very strong chance that they will do the easiest thing and buy protected WMA files from Urge. This could spell disaster for Apple, particularly if Microsoft is willing to replace any protected AAC files in people's collections free of charge.
Finally, while in the early days of online music sales, it was the players and not the music downloads that drove the market, we are inevitably going to find that the players become the razor and the downloadable music the blades. Microsoft will probably price their player based on that model.

I agree. I like MS strategy. They want to get their foot in the door and compete, then sell you all kinds of other ish. Look at the XBOX/XBOX 360, they may sell them at a loss, but with the Software, XBOX Live, and the Marketplace, they are making their money.

Online surveys are worth the paper they are written on. The best data suggest that iPhone marketshare in the US is stagnant and Android based handsets are booming
Which doesn't mean much because it doesn't factor in the iPod or iPad, which both run iOS. It's better to look at platform marketshare rather than just smartphone marketshare.

I have a really strange problem changing the background wallpaper. Every time my computer goes to sleep the old background will be back again. However, this can be solved with a simple Shut Down before going to sleep.

As a typical consumer, same as a prosumer, or pro -- speed. For example, backing up your iDevice, importing big megapixel photos and HD videos will be a whole lot quicker.
It will also make connections easier as TB can handled video, audio, and data in the same cable.
