Apple's got their hands down Intel's pants as well, don't forget that. Who has exclusive rights to Thunderbolt for now, and early access to the Z68 chipset? That's right, Apple.

Sure, they may be investing in ARM, but to switch architectures again and piss a lot of people off in the process, I think not. I'm saying it's vaporware until ARM delivers with better processors that they have promised (remind you of the 3GHz promise with the G5?) Even at that, they would have to beat Intel, who has better experience, reputation, resources and establishment.

So Ford and Sony and Boing will suit everyone for making products that looks and works like theirs? Just to give a wild example.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it was my understanding that Yonah and Merom were being priced identically (at same clock speed) by Intel.

Yes, but after the Merom release the prices of Yonah will be cheaper.

Ha ha! Way to go Apple!!!! Kill the competition any way you can!!

    Love my iPad

With that said, it is absolutely idiotic to want no competition for Apple in any product

It seems the present size could be reduced to the 5 x 19 size without turning the optical drives vertical. The tower configuration would still be oriented vertically, and many mounts are available to attach it under a desk. Optical drives don't need to be phased out because they are needed for writing CD / DVD back-ups

What I would like to see is an air filtration system that will prevent all of the dust from getting into everything inside my MP. I can add my own filter, but that might not be advisable due to the fan having to work overtime, and that could lead to heat problems.

Perhaps the overall weight could be reduced in this rumored size reduction.

When prices drop substantially, SSDs will be a good storage plan. However, that may not be in the next couple of years, so the present drive bay size should not be reduced.

I disagree with you on this. I agree with you on the MBP. Apple just revved the specs of their displays and they also released the education iMac. I think the iMac is a homerun for Apple on the desktop. Obviously the strongest Apple product right now is the MacBook. But while I think you're right on with the MBP, I think they will find a way to update the iMac for new, faster processors while retaining the current design/enclosure. Even if it has Merom inside. After all they could rev it to Merom 2.1 and 2.3 and some nice new features and I don't think many people will complain. (Alright some will complain, they always do, but that's beside the point).

I would bet Conroe is the single processor option for Mac Pros to fill out the mid-range desktop line. The Mac Pro starts at $2,499 and that's way too expensive. I'm thinking there's going to be something to fill the gap between $1,499 and $2,499. That's where Conroe comes in.I hope you're right. My scenario is excluding the idea Apple will fill in that sub $2k tower hole they seem to be neglecting a LOT. Would make a lot of sense for them to simply extend the Mac Pro enclosure down into that space with Conroes. Mac Pro expandability is really fantastic. A Conroe motherboard in that same case would be the ticket. Or a cheaper enclosure with the same expadability capacity would work. I would hate to see them offer a Conroe Mac with less expadability inside.

I don't think I've hated any company so passionately as I hate Verizon. I have not one positive word to say about them. If/when Apple announces a phone, I'll pay the early termination fee on my Verizon contract and jump to the carrier with Apple's phone. Hopefully that'll be Cingular.

I have tried all four of the major cell companies in America except for Cingular, although my brother had it and travels a ton (new day, new city) and dropped it. Maybe it's better now.

Sprint has always been reliable for me, although their people will get you into a major frenzy with a $500 phone bill. The international is awful, might I add.

Verizon was reliable, although their network has been terrible. As I've said, I never get 3 bars or above, and I live in Denver! The service will constantly go out whenever I'm in NYC. The phones do seem to be cheap. My Samsung A670 is probably the only non-joke phone they had, and I've been pretty happy with it.

While I was in Sprint practically everyday trying to figure out what the hell I'd do for my trip to Singapore and Cambodia, they swindled me into signing up for 2 new phones and the SIM card for the international one never came! Luckily, my aunt was smart and had phones from T-Mobile with int'l rates of $0.99/min ($1.50 for Sprint, Verizon was even worse). Quite honestly, the voice quality was great, from here to Singapore. The service was really good, too. I'm just going to pay the Verizon termination fee and get a PEBL because I can't deal with the Nation's Most Unreliable network.

does anyone else notice that on intels site, the core2 duo is only refered to in PC's????

    Commercial:
    "I'm a Mac," cool guy.
"And I'm a PC," dorky guy.
"And I'm a PC too." cool guy

    http://www.apple.com/getamac/ It's the Touch one.

You now have to start making distiction between PC meaning running Windows and PC meaning personal computer meaning for personal use. I believe the Apple II was the first to call itself a personal computers.

i think they would be cutting their profits to a certain age group of potential buyers

I completely disagree. Apple would reach a larger audience with a candy-bar style phone that is sub $250. If they can just release an inexpensive version and a souped up version shortly after, they could really kill Palm.

How many other ways are there to design a simple tablet/touch screen phone before they start looking the same?

Oh come on, we aren't really going to resort to the "there's only one way to design a mobile device" argument, are we? You're telling me the only way to design the Galaxy Tab was to make it look identical to the iPhone 3GS?

My iPhone 4 doesn't look anything like my wife's iPhone 3GS, so apparently there are at least two ways to design a mobile phone.

None of the other Android phones or tablets I've seen look like iPhones either. Only Samsung's.

Of course Verizon will wait two years before they decide to adopt it into their lineup.

Ha! Verizon will NEVER carry it.

Anyway I'm on verizon and its been nothing but problems with them for the past year or so. Their 'can you hear me now' network has turned into the 'what? hello? HELLO? *click*' network. I'll be happy to switch if the new phone is not on verizon.

I'm pretty happy with VZW service. Their phones are lousy and crippled, but after trying every other provider, VZW was the only one who had almost perfect service in NYC, and I need reliable service more than I need a shiny phone.

Apple is a business whose mission is to sell phones, computers, and software. You as a customer buy those products, but they are designed by Apple. If you have a problem with Apple establishing a standard across its products to ensure quality, then you can just stop using them. That easy, just stop buying Apple products and stop using them, period.

That's right, I'm a customer, and I'll modify my apple device how I see fit, and that including jailbreaking, enabling XCode to develop applications for my device without paying apple $99 ( afterall, nothing is going to reach the appstore - so why does Apple deserve the $99 ?). At the end of the day - a JB device is more useful than a locked up device.

Mac Pro and Xserve have the Xeon (Woodcrest).
MacBook Pro, MacBook, and iMac will be upgraded to the Core 2 Duo (Merom).
Mac Mini will probably keep the Core Duo (Yonah).

I agree except I think they will put Conroe in the iMac.

Can it be free some time in the next...Week or so? They're about to charge my card, but I do want to keep using the service. $99 is a bit much but Find My iPhone is practically worth it alone.

Good post. I'm still waiting for a phone that will easily (and thoroughly) sync with my Address Book and iCal, and I'm on the mac platform. So even some of the features you describe would be of immediate value to a lot of mac users.

My experience with Symbian (Series 60) is that it does a very thorough sync'ing using iSync.... and of course there are many, many phones that do at least a loosely passable job... even my cute but dumb RAZR. Are you serious or joking?

Here is how I grade the Car Kit (1-10):
    Mounting: 8
    Rotation: 7
    Articulation: 3
Hands-Free: 4 (Weak, speaker is facing away from you, VOX'ing problem)
GPS: 6 (Only very slightly better that the built in GPS)
Compatibility: 3 (Can't use iPod Touch)
Bluetooth: 2 (Phone will not pair until docked, can't pair with other devices)

Overall it's a $79.00 retail mount with a questionable hands-free, only a small incremental change in GPS accuracy and a useless bluetooth implementation. I'll give it a generous 5 out of 10 for now.

    *************************************************************

Nice review, and thanks. It sounds like you might have gotten a unit that is sub par. The rotation and articulation of the car kit in many of the Youtube videos seems very tight, very solid with strong mounting. Did it just loosen up over that short time or did it start out not so great? Maybe send it back?

I thought I remember reading that the Handsfree Bluetooth is duplex so I'm also not sure where your issue comes from. That said, I may get that as a separate item on the visor of my car if its below quality. I have another car with a BluAnt unit in it and its terrific.

Also, there are now several places where you can order the car kit for much less money. I have an order into BTL for $87 which sounds like a more reasonable price for the unit. I'm sure it will continue to drop.

    Thanks again!

It always seems that Apple loves to sue suppliers of components in their own products. It's as if Apple is saying to Samsung, "Thanks for your support, now watch as we sue you, make money back from you, and essentially get our parts at a reduced cost; if not free." :p
